If you're going to play alone you need to be motivated and goal oriented, otherwise you will get bored very quickly. There is a constant tug of war between corporations and alliances (corp = guild, and alliances are groups of corps that can claim territory in the game), and if you're not part of that then you're not really part of the story of EVE, which is mostly written by the players.
Although solo play is viable, it will make for a lonely experience, much more so than in a game like WoW. This can rustle the jimmies of people who are not used to real loss in a game.Ĥ) Playing alone. If you have no ISK (EVE's currency) you'll have to start again with an extremely basic rookie ship. They will either have been destroyed or looted by filthy pirates. Your ship will not respawn, neither will your former belongings. At some point, someone somewhere will destroy your beloved ship and you will lose its contents. Everywhere in open space is a PvP zone, although some areas are more heavily protected by NPCs than others. Whether you actively choose to hunt down other players or not, almost everything you do is in direct competition with them. It really is a sandbox, and if you're not the kind of person who can make your own fun then you're going to have a bad time.ģ) PvP. In recent years CCP has implemented some hand-holding features to help guide you into the game and point you towards various activities, but there is so much to do in this game that new players can still feel quite lost and unsure what they're supposed to do. If you go look at EVE Online killboards, you see that even the best PvPers have about a 50/50 win rate. aren't like amazing gods of PvP or masters of the game or anything. if you do the math, then yeah, actually straight up buying characters might actually be more efficient than just waiting for your characters to skill up over the years.Īnother thing too is, that the super "good" PvPers. Paying $200 might sound insane, but consider that you pay a subscription fee of $15 a month to play.

It's so heavily timegated that account trading is a big part of the EVE community, because people don't want to spend years and years waiting for their character to learn how to fly a certain kind of ship, when they can just pay another player $200 for their character who already learned that skill. So it takes years of real life time for your character to learn skills. Now that battleship piloting 1 skill also has prerequisite skills you have to have learned first, like Cruiser piloting 3 (again, can't remember the name), and that has prerequisite skills. You buy the skill book, consume the skill book, and then you go into your skills menu and set "learn that skill", and then your character will take like 2 weeks to learn that skill (the timer ticks down regardless of whether or not you are logged into the game). You need to learn the skill Battleship Piloting 1 or something (I forgot the name of it). For example, let's say you want to fly a Battleship. In EVE, your character's skills level up based on a IRL timer. The reason why EVE is a time sink is because of the skill system. There is also the EVE University, which has easy to read tutorials and guides, but you won't really need to read most of them. It might take you a few days to get a grasp for how the mechanics, but that's it. If you're a new player, you can pretty safely minimize most of those windows, and learn what you need to as you go.
